A good day to all - comrades, teachers, juniors, guys, girls, gays and lesbians. Many of you here would probably know me by different names; be it Clarence, Chinzilla, Chinchilla, etc, etc. However, the least that matters today would actually be my name. Taking, hopefully, at the most 10 minutes of your precious time, I shall make this humble inspirational speech.

To all my juniors:

First of all, I would like to share with everyone present here a little story. The story begins like this …

There was once a young handsome looking man, that with the wink of an eye, he could make girls around him swoon and fantasize about him in their dreams.

The end.

You may laugh, but that is exactly my point. Many times in life, you will find obstacles that will obstruct you from progressing further or that you would lose yourself in a haze. In fact, the greatest obstacle that you can possibly face in your future trials and tribulations is you, yourself.

I hope that every one of you here have realized that it is impossible to survive alone in this world. Teamwork and people relations; these are necessary in even the simplest daily routines. But above all, these are things that are valued greatly in choir.

“One voice, one choir.” We sing as one choir, train as one choir, laugh as one choir, and suffer as one choir. I do hope that the above quote would reach your ears and be carefully remembered.

I do hope that most of you here have made your purchase of the SYF photo, even more so if you bought the size 8R photo. I am sure that should you decide to stick it somewhere near your study table, it will work like a charm help you stay awake whilst you are revising daily, because there is my face on it.

To the Sec3s:

Leadership is not about being elected or appointed to (an office) the committee. The committee does not teach someone how to be a leader. Leadership is an attitude cultivated over time.

Are you one to stand up for what you believe in and 'face the music' even when that music happens to be unpleasant? Do you have a goal and promise to work hard in order to achieve it? Do you have a vision? These are all questions that true leaders answer in the affirmative.

However, how do you become a leader?

Every small decision you make takes you one-step closer to your goal. Keep in mind that the goal is not to achieve power, but to achieve your vision and fulfil you promise. Leaders without visions can be likened to driving in a strange town without a road map; you are going to wind up somewhere; it just might not be in the best part of town.

To my comrades for 4 years, and perhaps more:

It has come down to this very day and it seems as though it was only yesterday when we first came together to strive for a common interest. We have come to the end of this section of our journey. However, do not slacken, for the journey has yet to truly end.

What lie ahead of us is not just the upcoming prelims, nor our O levels, but a life of full of obstacles. However, do not fear should you face any problem. Recall the times spent, stuck in the choir room with me, and tell yourself that you have overcome the greatest horror. What lie ahead of your journey cannot possibly be more challenging than it has been to sit in the same room with a jester for over 4 years.

I do hope that all of you here would miss me, miss my jokes, my humour, my silly and perhaps some witty remarks. I do hope that these will remain etched in your memory. To refresh your memory, you can remember me as the founder of the Choir blog, the joker - and horror - of choir, the prankster who made every one in choir look like a fool on April Fools day this year.

Regardless which aspect of me you remember, my image shall always haunt you. If by some mysterious reason you do not, may the flies of a thousand camels attack your armpits.

To the teachers:

I thank you for making my life in choir so meaningful, if not, memorable. The choir is what it is today, because of your effort and hard work; they will not be taken for granted. Once again, I thank you all for everything that you have given us.

Just to inform you guys, in case you have not recieved the Choir Relay message for some unknown and unexpected reasons, that the Choir Camp has been canceled due to the increase in number of Type A (H1N1) cases in S'pore. The holiday practices this coming week will be canceled as well. All to await further notice on this matter.

Normal practices should resume when school reopen (I think).

I know you guys are sad (especially the Sec3s), so am I.
Hope you have a good weekend before school resumes on 29th June (if everything goes well and that MOE does not extend the holidays due to H1N1 AGAIN).

Hi Clarence,

Thanks for your e-mail. I'll try to answer your queries to the best of my abilities. I can't really remember the performance but have a faint recollection of it. If you have a recording (i know it's illegal), it'll be good for us to refresh our memories.

I remember the European piece, which sounded Polish to me, but then again I'm not too sure. It was alright, but I honestly don't quite get your sudden tone change. You guys gradually went flat, but that's common, but can be avoided by consistently tuning pitches upwards. The same goes for the flat descending and sharp ascending. Counter-act this by tuning it in the opposite direction you're moving. It's a lot of listening in order to get the pitches right where you need them. Don't tune against the piano. It's not the right way to tune voices. Think string instruments like the violin or cello which has many variation of pitches. Experiment with 5-note scales ascending and descending. When you're done with it, do fifth apart. If you can get the pitching for fifth apart, add in the third. Now you have a chord, so no matter what whether you ascending upwards or downwards, if your pitching is stable, it'll never go out of tune.

Generally you guys could use a good vocal coach. I'm not recommending anyone but try to get someone qualified, i.e. at least some background in solo voice singing. The girls were airy but it was a general trend throughout. I'm sure your conductor has already told you this but sing using your diaphragm. Most people take years to get accustomed to singing this way. I'm not quite sure what kind of tone your conductor advocates, but I personally prefer a rich, rounded deep tone. Listen to good European choirs, e.g. Tallis Scholars, and for the male voices the King Singers are honestly good to emulate. It's difficult, and honestly i doubt most Singaporean choirs are able to really fix all these problems overnight. However, if you actually bothered to e-mail me to find out, means you're really determined in improving your choir, which i applaud you in doing.

For Lelo, the girl's tone was slightly shrill, i.e. too much head-tone, kinda distracting from the rest of the piece. The set-piece i honestly can't remember. Heard too many already.

hi clarence!

i'm afraid i wasn't around when your choir performed today, but i can give generalist comments on how to improve sound :)

1. pitching
the idea that yeshamiel's trying to explain is called 'just intonation' where (here's the scientific part) is different from tuning to a piano. in a piano the spacing between each semitone is equal, but for just intonation, spacing between each semitone will differ based on the key the music is in. i.e. will sound just slightly sharper or flatter than the piano note.

a bit hard to explain in words, but perhaps you could youtube a good choir performance, then check the pitching of their notes against a piano :)

regarding training to sound in tune with each other, yes, do try to tune perfect octaves, 5ths and 3rds apart. get the choir to sing a major chord, e.g. C-E-G for C major chord. if the chord's in tune you'll get this pleasant, faint ringing sound. many choirs might tune the G too high and the E is totally off. getting the middle note right is rather hard; it's supposed to be tuned lower than one might think.

remember the solfage we all had to learn in primary school music? the direction which our hands were supposed to point indicate whether that note should be tuned higher or lower :D

so, doh is normal, re should be higher, mi should be slightly lower, fa should be slightly lower, so normal, la lower, ti higher, do normal. or so that's what the solfage says.

try this: sing the C major scale, the the G major scale or the F major scale. take reference from the piano for the starting (doh) note. notice that the "E" in the C major scale has a different pitch than the "E" in the F major scale. the "D" in all scales sound different from each other, too etc. the difference is very slight but noticeable for the slightly trained ear...

when doing sectionals, listen to whether you guys get back the same note after singing a phrase with many of the same notes in it. or you can keep playing the tonic/doh note of the key throughout the practice and see if you're in tune with the doh (so primary school music education made some sense after all haha)

2. technique
airy sound is cause the voice is not focused. think about aiming your voice at a particular point a distance away. the sound should feel like it's a beam, going through your upper teeth/nose area. but keep the back of the mouth really wide open too, or else the sound will be shrill.

try gaping your mouth wide open, and let your knuckles rest just below your cheekbones as you sing. bare a bit of teeth.

just experiment with the placement and technique until you feel that it is comfortable singing that way. you can even try mimicking classical singers during sectionals, seriously just experiment :) because everyones bodies are different and by just doing exactly what i said above or what your choir director says isn't enough, as only you yourself can feel what's best for you :) especially when you are made to do something that strains your throats. no one can tell for sure, sometimes, if you're straining a little, but you can feel it yourself...

the above are just some pointers, some of the most important ones... hope i'm not confusing you either. if you're still unsure do feel free to continue this email correspondence:)

I believe even though SYF 2009 has come to an end, however this isn't the end of the BBSS Choir. To continue maintaining or going beyond what we have attained and maintained, we would have to get feed backs and constructive comments such as the given above. I requested for a more detailed comment on our SYF pieces and areas of improvement even during our normal schedule. We don't have to with all our heart just for SYF, just for 5 months. That would be rather meaningless.

So, to leave the future batches a easier pathway to SYF 2011, this post on our experience and feedback from the online critic is necessary.

To The Choir,

I would like to make an apology for what happened on the 1st of April. In the name of "Choir Relay", I spread the message that the choir was to meet outside the Music Centre at 0645hour in the morning.

As a result, this caused major problems for most people who received the message, as the message was relayed down. I seek your forgiveness and give you my greatest apology. I believe there is nothing much I can do to repay for what I had done that day. However, I am going to run 3 rounds around the school on Saturday, after Choir practice, as punishment for my over blown-up prank that caused much unwanted inconveniences.

That would no doubt be the one and only time it would ever happen, history will not repeat itself after today. Once again, with my greatest apologies, I seek your forgiveness.

this is angela by the way.
about the audition today, i hope you won't be so affected.
i know some of you may say that i may never understand how you feel, because well, i've never experienced what you've just experienced. i admit that too, that yes, i may never understand. but i can only encourage you all to hold on to your passion. some of you may think curse at us or give up on choir. well, that is your choice, but i want you to recall why is it you joined choir the first place. definitely not because you wanted to join syf! that will be quite a miserable reason because i don't think any of you want to sing for glory but of love. okay, i guess what i'm saying is kinda mad, but i really feel for you. why? because duh, you are MY choir right? even if you can't sing for syf, you can sing with the sec 1s & in 2 years time, my dear sec2s will be taking over my present position & go through syf. while taking the opportunity to sing with the sec1s you can actually train them in the long run for your next syf. don't tell yourself you are lousy that's why you didn't pass, it's only because you're unprepared. look, it's the same as our studies, if we fail, we have only ourselves to blame because we were unprepared for our exams right? (which often happens to me) most of the time maybe because we take things too lightly. don't degrade yourselves & think you are worse off at singing than those who passed the auditions. that isn't true. you are who you think you are, best is to humble yourself. like me, i will never say i'm good enough, simply because there are so many others out there better than me! if you set your mind on something, like to improve on your singing, you will! for the sec3s, even though there will not be any chance for you to take part in syf anymore, if syf really means so much to you & your desire for singing is that strong, there is syf in jc too. don't fret, this is only a tiny setback in life, dear juniors. out there in the real world, many tougher challenges await us. don't let this pull you back from persuing your dream. don't give up! you will be often missed at practices for each of your presence is special.

Hey people!

I know the stress is building up lately in school and due to the upcoming SYF Central Judging, and so I am hoping and would like to plan an outing for all of us. Everyone in the choir is invited as long as you fit the following criteria - lively, pro active, energetic and fully interested in what my outing is going to be.

Skip the introduction, the sport we are going to be doing as, probably our first outing excluding from Choir camps, is bowling! However this is not the only option we have. If you have any other suggestions on the activity that all of us can probably carry out, you are welcome to tag on the tagboard to share.

SO what are you waiting for?!

Note: Venue and date of activity are all unconfirmed. A follow up for an outing would be carried out.

Also, I have news to share with you guys. I received 12 free tickets to sites such as Sentosa, Jurong Birdpark, National Museum, S'pore River Cruises' bum boats and S'pore Flyer. This offer is only also specially offered for the choir. The offer however will cease after this weekend. Sorry for the extremely late notice.

This particular outing will be held on this Sunday, 1st of March 2009. Interested participants may approach me for more details. Decision on the exact site to visit is unconfirmed until I get the full list of 11 other interested participants.

Hope to receive many positive feedbacks on both outings, in particular the latter as this special offer is on available in the month of February, brought to you by the Singapore Tourism Board in collaboration with the various sites.

Heres an update on the BBQ we are having on tuesday,23 dec 2008.

venue: Regent Heights Condominium
meeting place and time: 3.30pm at Bukit Batok int (plz do not be late tq =])

Those coming for the BBQ and attending choir practice on tues plz bring $10 for the food during practice.
Those who are unable to attend practice will have to pay the $10 during the BBQ itself. Thank You!

Every Tuesdays and Thursdays starting from 9th December, Tuesday.

Objectives:

Cultivate an interest in choral singing,

Maintain an acceptable attitude of discipline,

ONE black folder (with refillable plastic sheets)
Pen / pencil
Water bottle

Rules:

Punctuality (15 min grace): late mark in attendance
Music Scores (20 cents/page if lost/ forgotten to bring)
Attendance

All official rehearsals, including sectionals (with or without instructor's presence) are counted in attendance.

Absence from choir: - inform Section Leader, produce excuse letter / medical certificate by the next session

Zero mark for absence, with or without valid reason

Above 80% attendance per year before awarded CCA points

100% attendance of all pre-concert or SYF rehearsals before participation in actual event is allowed

Audition:
New members:
-Under probation and in JUNIOR CHOIR in the first year, will only advance to Senior Choir the following year if performance for the whole year is satisfactory

Sec 1-3's:
- required to obtain 80% or more attendance before being allowed to
audition for any performance/ SYF
- required to pass audition before performance allowed

- Sec 4-5's: need not take audition ONLY IF 80% attendance achieved

Money matters:
-Hand-phone (Fine of $5.00 if it rings during practice),

The Order of the Mass has long been the inspiration
for some of the most beautiful choral music composed.
Corrado Margutti's Missa Lorca unites past and
present with his artful marrying of excerpts from
Monteverdi's Missa "In Illo Tempore' with paradoxical
poems of Federico Garcia Lorca. Each poem reinforces
the corresponding part of Mass and provides fresh
realisation of the ancient rite. Hence, word is used to
enhance the Word.

In contrast, Thomas Jennefelt's Villarosa Sequences
form a minimalist, almost meditative choral cycle.
The text to this vocal music was written in after
the music had been composed and can be seen as
mere instrumentation and colouring. Formed from a
latin-esque language, the composer has created text
to fit his music, thus freeing it from semantics and
allowing individual interpretation.

i'm pondering should i pour the comments
from my friend and her friends who are from NHHS Choir
the fact that they may not sound very nice at the moment
the fact that she hasnt gave me the good points
but as she said on the whole it was okay..

there was comments that the for the You Raise Me Up
that the boys looked blur..
and was clipping, kinda agree...

that the sop 1's wasnt really very clear,
kinda strainning, according to them..
Puttin on the Ritz
1st note went flat
i think i was one of them who went flat =X

they also commented that the combine songs
like any how sing
i have to back that up that i was rather boring for us la right?
so kinda no energy...
so she said it was also kinda airy,
got voices sticking out
maybe from those trying to fight against the CO
like me..
some mouth not open
which i'm not sure who or which section
i hope your know who your are,
but i dun think its from the seniors la...

Some good points i received so far
as i have not ask further
was that the "Part of Your World"
was pretty nice...
the Alumni item was not bad too

guess in the end i still pour them out
dun feel down as they are rather tiny winy mistakes
so believe on the whole we still peformed very well
insisting that there would not be anymore bad points...
this meant that there are many other good points
that's how we should look into these comments...

The last concert after our 4years have finally come, the concert which we have all slogged hard for, the different sacrifices made, even the time when we got chased out. (: "Bridging Of Melodies" This concert. we shed our sweat and tears for, no other junior would be able understand if you actually tell them how much you have sacrificed. We have cases of multiple subject failures, being unable to catch up with school work, having to skip lunch and end up having gastrics, personal time after school is lost and other stuff like that. Even how a few of us got chased out of school by the security guard and had to face a fuming mad security guard and maybe even teacher. This time round, I mentioned every committe member.[Incase Shaun complaint again -.-"] (Music Committee in Brackets)

before i go on to the main purpose of me coming to post
i would like to say that (again) that i
soo agree with what maria said.
i believe i have talked to some one about it before

anw, back to the main purpose of me posting...
after hearing what ms seah and ms yee
had said during the last session
like she said, was our presentation
and i kinda feel that it may be how we had present the song

i believe most of us, are not swaying yet, (including me =X)
which is rather not so acceptable for those, like me,
have went for SYF last year..
its only right for us to keep such habits on
and not just because ms yee, didn't say it
or that SYF is over, we should forget about it
i'm sure deep down, your do agree with me
that is if your reading this.
so PLEASE do tell the sec1's and others
who did not participate in last year's SYF
that they need to sway
APPROPRIATELY with the song...

then i believe another view that
our presentation is not up to standard yet,
might be our interpretation of the song
and that would be how we present the feelings in the song
the purpose of the song (History/SS),
the content (History/SS),
and finally the tone of the song (again HY/SS).
so do take some time to feel the song
and dun just know it
but put in those feelings in to it when you sing
hopefully, this would hmmm
maybe surprise ms yee,
and make her think,
"hmmm, BBSS choir is very automatic,
know what to do without me telling them again..."

and lastly,
i think there's hardly anyone up here
and i'm not really happy about it
as it denies the existence of the blog
and destroys the purpose of having this blog
thus i would put up a web counter
if the numbers on the web counter does not
meet my so called target
than i might as well delete the blog
for me, i have the blog as one of my tabs on the home page
and that it means that
i visit the blog everyday,
and i would request that your would take at least some time
to see if there's any update

and lastly, the purpose of the blog
was to provide the members with information
fresh from the oven
and that parts of the songs we sing are
also uploaded on the net
and linked on the post
if not, there might be videos
that might be posted up here
with regard to choir
and do take note,
PLEASE, is there any sec 2's or 1's interested
in taking charge of the blog?!
if not either way, the blog would still have to be deleted
after my batch is gone
so please step up and try it out...

Hello guys! :D Well, I am going to mention quite a sensitive post here. Wonder who will read it actually :P Actually, it goes out to all the current sec3s! I was just looking at some of my GB junior's blog and those who didnt get a post or whatever, they were so, so disappointed.

I just hope this selection of future leaders thingy won't make people upset or even create a conflict among the choir. Ok, dont ask me who are the future leaders too, becasue I have totally no clue about it. LOL.

Hmmm, soooo, I just wanna say that even if any of you didnt get a post, I really really hope to still see you serve choir as a big korkor or jiejie to your juniors, and help this growing(in size) choir to the best of your gifts and abilities :)

Well, that is my last wish before I really move on and not always come to see see you all practising, or help help in any concert :)

Choir, here's a small reminder. If Ms Yee comes in at 9am, everyone is expected to reach at least 15minutes earlier than her!

Secondary 3 choir members. Starting 11/03/08, all of you will be in-charge of the following (you may want to draft up a schedule)

i. Arrangement of chairs & shifting of Piano before and after practise
¬Senior Choir: 2rows
¬Junior Choir: 1row
¬Full Strenght: 3rows

ii. Cleanliness of MPR
¬Ensure that the rubbish bin is cleared after every practices
¬Inform me if food or food wrappers is found in the bin
¬Ensure no one eats/drink (Besides Plain Water) in the room unless special approval is given
¬Ensure that there are no litter left around after practices
¬Ensure No scores to be left around after practices
¬Sweep the floor if there is a need to

iii. Ready for practise
¬Ensure everyone is seated in their positions at least 2minutes before practise starts
¬Prepare to be called to do either Physical or Vocal warm-ups

Tickets:
All choir members please be reminded that if you have sold your tickets, do bring the cash collected when there are practices and be ready to pass them to Ms Seah, if you have not done so. All those who have yet to sell the tickets they have with them please remember to do so asap. Do ask your family members and friends.

Choir members who need extra tickets please also inform Ms Seah about it, tell her the exact number of how many more tickets you need so that she could pass it to you.

Practices
Junior choir members will start both Tuesday and Thursday practices starting 26th February, however senior choir please be prepared for intensive practices on Saturdays to commence soon.

Attendance
If you are going to be late for practices or are unable to attend, please inform your various leaders beforehand.

All Medical Certificates or Parental Letters to be passed to your various leaders. Your attendance percentage is going to be calculated soon, for those who did not hit a minimum of 85% attendence (Besides Sec4s and 5s), you will not be given a chance to be auditioned for the concert.

The choosen song for the concert's Audition is 'Somewhere Out There', please memorise it well with all your dynamics and all that. Members who do not fare well, may not pass the audition or only get to sing the easier songs for the concert.

This is abit late but then..

Altos, i'm sorry the MP3 files for 'Nina Bobok' is not up here as the CDs are in the cupboard. So, please make an effort to practise at least once before tomorrow's practise.

All Sec2-5 members please take note, practise tomorrow. Boys to be in Multi Purpose Room by 3pm and girls 3.30pm. 'All I Ask Of You' and the chinese song are to be memorised, do not be late tomorrow! Combine practise with the Chinese Orcherstra tomorrow. P.S. don't throw my face on the ground please. :P

Anyway, some good news! Our dear ex-chairman, Belinda scored 8 distinctions for her O levels!! Well, just an inspiration to you all.. Hmm, I also did ok ok lah. Haha. Didnt fail any subjects, got only 1 dist, the rest Bs with a pass in Chinese! Hope I'm a inspiration to you too!! -__- Do continue the choir history by topping the school! :D Since I was in sec1, the choir members have been doing us proud. So current sec4s, JIAYOU!!! :D

Ok, enough said. lazy to post more photos. Oh, practice hard for your March concert! Woot! I LOVE CONCERTS! So jealous you all can sing so many songs. Hmph :P Don't skip practices too hor! Or I'll haunt you! MUAHAHHAHAHA!

2. Attendence is compulsory unless there is valid reason.
